I’ve been using the Galaxy S24 Ultra for a while, so I was curious to see how the Pixel 10 Pro XL would stack up against it. Both are high-end phones, but they shine in different ways. The Pixel’s display is gorgeous — a 6.8″ Super Actua OLED that gets unbelievably bright outdoors (up to 3,300 nits). Side by side, I’d say the S24 Ultra’s resolution might look a touch sharper, but the Pixel wins hands down for sheer brightness and visibility in sunlight. The polished aluminium frame and Gorilla Glass Victus 2 give it that premium feel, very much on par with Samsung’s build.Performance is where you notice the biggest difference. The Tensor G5 chipset is much improved from previous Pixels and handles day-to-day use easily, but it’s not quite in the same league as the Snapdragon powerhouse in the S24 Ultra. Gaming and really heavy workloads still feel smoother on the Samsung. That said, Google’s AI integration is excellent — features like Gemini, Camera Coach, Magic Cue, and Pixel Journal are clever, polished, and genuinely useful. Samsung’s ecosystem feels broader (with things like DeX), but Google’s AI-first approach is impressive.Battery life is solid, with a 5,200 mAh cell and support for 45 W wired / 25 W wireless charging. It lasts well, though in real-world use it doesn’t leap ahead of the S24 Ultra. And like most flagships now, there is a charging USB cable in the box.The cameras are where the Pixel really shines. The triple system — 50 MP main, 48 MP ultrawide, and 48 MP telephoto with 5× optical and AI-enhanced zoom up to 100× — is exceptional. In low light, the Pixel pulls out detail and balanced tones in a way that feels effortless, and the AI really does the heavy lifting. Samsung still wins if you want ultra-high megapixel resolution and raw hardware muscle, but for point-and-shoot excellence, the Pixel’s results are hard to beat. What tips the balance further is Google’s 7 years of Android OS and security updates, which is one of the best commitments you’ll find on any smartphone today. In short: the Pixel 10 Pro XL is a stunning phone with a class-leading display, brilliant AI-driven cameras, and unbeatable software support. If you care most about raw performance, maximum battery optimisation, and Samsung’s deep hardware ecosystem, the S24 Ultra still has the edge. But if you want AI smarts, the brightest display, and cameras that make photography effortless, the Pixel is a serious contender.

SPECS:If you already have a Pixel 9, the Pixel 10 series is not a radical redesign, but it does offer some new features, especially in AI, which I will talk about a little more in this review.WEIGHT:It’s quite a weighty phone compared to others. It weighs 329g with the case I got for it.LOOK:It looks very sleek and stylish. I love the design. It looks great without a case for those who like to use it like this.DISPLAY: The display is nice and bright, and easy to see outdoors.SETUP:This was easy to set up initially. It walks you through everything and everything went very smoothly. However, I soon discovered that although it is all brand new and ordered right after the launch, it already needed a system update, and a few other downloads and updates in individual apps in order to get all the features working well. I’ve read a review online where someone said they had issues with sluggishness and lagginess: I don’t know, but perhaps there was a rush to release this phone and so out of the box the phone may not work optimally. Hopefully after all the updates, over time it’ll work better and better.CAMERA:Straight out of the box the AI x100 zoom is not installed. The default zoom only goes up to x30. I had to research what to do to access the x100. I had to go to the camera settings, press “Model download” and download the Pro Res Zoom which is 1.04GB. The Pro Res Zoom x100 only works in the default 12 MP resolution. If you’re in the 50MP mode it caps at x30. There is a helpful “?” icon that walks you through how to use the camera with all its features, which I appreciated. There’s a new AI Camera Coach to help with photography skills. An upgrade from previous Pixel phones is the 8K video recording, which is a great feature to have.BATTERY:With heavy work (downloading apps, doing system updates etc.) the battery seemed to go down fairly quickly, so battery life didn’t stand out in being amazing with this amount of heavy use. With lighter use the battery life was better, but I’m not sure it’s quite as good as some other phones.HEADPHONE USE:Like many phones these days, you need USB-C port compatible headphone if you want wired headphones with this.ETHERNET:I’m one of those rare people who have Pay as you Go on my phone and use it mostly as a house-phone, so I like to plug it into an ethernet adapter via the USB-C port to have it connected to the internet that way. I was delighted to find the USB-C port is ethernet-compatible (not all phones are) and the internet works really well. The fit of the USB-C cable is very tight though and detaching requires quite a bit of power.CHARGING SPEED:It works with up to 45W charging so should be faster charging than older Pixel models. It’s also compatable with magnetic charging up to 25W wirelessly.AI FEATURES:Some of the new features of this new model of Pixel are its AI features such as:- Magic Cue- Pro Res Zoom- Real time in-call voice translation (Hello Star Trek Universal Translator!)- Gemini Live- NotebookLM- C2PA Content Credentials: Built-in metadata enables AI images to be traced and verified as authentic or generated for the first time on any smartphone.CHIP & PERFORMANCE:Compared to the Pixel 9, the Pixel 10 Pro XL has a Next-Gen Chip: Tensor G5. Built on a 3 nm process, the Tensor G5 should deliver up to 34% faster CPU speeds and 60% more powerful TPU (AI processing) compared to the Tensor G4 in Pixel 9 Pro XL.PERFORMANCE:At the time of review, it’s early days post-release, so perhaps some time needs to be given for all the updates to come in before I judge the performance. Theoretically at least, from the Pixel 9 series to this 10 series, this phone has had upgrades to UFS 4.0 storage and 16 GB RAM which in time, after updates, should provide smoother operation, quicker app loading, and better multitasking than older Pixel models.Google has apparently committed to 7 years of OS and security updates for this phone – so in time, hopefully this phone will be even better than it is today.
